It's been how long since I posted last? This is why I will never "Tweet". I'd post something like, "There's a huge branch falling off a tree...", then not hear from me for 6 months, all the time assuming I had been crushed by said branch. All is well with the Smith family. Olivia is now 10 months old and growing up too fast. Work is going well for me. I have been involved with our most recent round of route adjustments in our office. That's been a real hoot! Lisa has been busy with working at our church part time helping with childcare and being a homemaker. No promises for another post soon, but I'll do my best. What a blast! On our second race I got the fastest lap time out of our group. (I say that because there were two die hard members of that track that beat me.) If you haven't gone karting before, you must go. As a side note it's 12:30 and 97 degrees right now. The forecast is a high of 101 degrees, an all time record for Seattle! My Internet usage has been slim to none the past month. (Not so you'd notice!) I finished my training and have been taking calls at work now. The first week and a half transitioning on to the phones I wanted to quit. My displeasure for it all went very deep. But, as fate would have it, I came around and am now starting to enjoy it more. I can see a great career there and hope I can make a positive difference on those around me.
Now, back to the header...I'm getting married in less than 3 weeks and it all feels so surreal! Lisa, her parents, my mom and I met this evening with the wedding planners/personages at the church where we're getting married. It was long and grueling, but we accomplished a lot. It just feels like it should be someone else and not me... Oh well. All you who are married probably know exactly how I'm feeling. No, I don't have buyer's remorse!
I talked to Derek tonight. He'll be driving over from Utah for the wedding. He, Jeremy and Jeff will be the monkeys in the line up. It'll be totally sweet! I'm looking forward to seeing some old friends. (Yeah, I'm talking about you Jeremy!) Good times. Can't wait to see all ya'll real soon. Lisa scored some Mariners tickets from work. It was a very joyous occasion when she called to inform me of this. Earlier today at work we had a drawing from those who have had perfect attendance in my training class, myself included. (I'm patting myself on the back right now.) The drawing was for tickets to see Kelly Clarkson on Sunday night. The girl who ended up winning wasn't even excited. She said she'd only go because she didn't have anything else planned. If I weren’t so ashamed, I would have asked (begged!) for them. I could have made myself look like a real sissy. "Please give me your tickets! I will pay you. I want nothing more than to see Kelly sing my song...it's...ummm...Miss Independent. Promise me you'll never speak of this to anyone." (Italics indicate a hushed tone, so as to keep my secret from others.) Seriously, I was pretty happy to learn that I had something extra fun to do this weekend. (I feel a beating from Lisa coming soon....) Although the Mariners got spanked by the A's it was a good game. Not the best I've been to, but good. Tomorrow I'm headed down to see the parental units while Lisa and her mom pick out flowers, invitation cards, shoes and whatever else tickles their fancy. (Matt Cooke, I always think of you when I hear that word...fancy. It's just the way you say it!) Ya'll have a great weekend.

Commercial Break

This just cracked me up. If you haven't seen it, make the investment. (David, I'm talking to you!) It's wicked awesome.
Lisa and I have more wedding errands to run today. We booked the cake maker last night. I've gotta' say, it felt oddly "normal" showing up at the Verizon Wireless campus this morning at 5:40am. My day went surprisingly well. Verizon is not only living up to my expectations, it's far exceeding them. There seems to be a good bunch (mostly) of people in my training class. The next seven to nine weeks ought to be interesting. It'll be a barrage of information. Tonight Lisa, her mom and I are meeting with a photographer for the wedding and reception. Hopefully it'll be a go. I made the epic journey last night after work. What a weird feeling. I wasn't sure I should jump for joy or barf. Being the "non-enthusiastic" person I am, I did neither. It just felt better that way. I received a letter from Verizon Wireless yesterday informing me that my offer of employment was terminated. Fortunately, two people from the HR department called me this week saying they would see me next Thursday (my start date). I suppose when I get there they will say something like, "I love you...no, I hate you!" Hopefully things level out. I'm considering pushing for a new slogan, "Verizon Wireless. We have massive mood swings." Kinda' catchy, eh? Well, I gotta' get going. Lisa and I have some serious wedding planning ahead of us today. See ya.

Gettin' Hitched

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm getting married. Lisa and I got engaged on the 4th. I must say, this is the most surreal feeling I've ever experienced. (Don't get me wrong; there is no second-guessing!) This whole week has been somewhat of a whirlwind. We're planning an October wedding. It seems pretty quick, but we've been talking about little details for a couple of months and we have the full support of both sets of parents. We've tentatively booked a church and a pastor. We had a pre-screening counseling session with Pastor Jim Wright from Crossroads church who will most likely be the one performing the ceremony. We just looked at a reception hall this morning out in Issaquah. It's too small, as we know way too many people! Lisa and her mom, Rita, will be looking at a couple of places on Monday evening.
Well, we've gotta' get goin'. We're off to help Mom and Dad move in to their new place in Gig Harbor. More updates will come next week.

Leavenworth

This past weekend Lisa and I and another couple drove over to Leavenworth for the afternoon. It was close to 100 degrees, which is not my ideal comfort level. We had a great time looking around at all the shops. It reminded me a lot of Ketchikan, in the fact that many of the shops sold much of the same stuff. I guess marketing trinkets, "junk", is common in every tourist trap. (For those that don't know, the town is a Bavarian, German theme.) We had German "dogs" for lunch. I put too much spicy mustard on and had a couple moments of sheer panic. Good times... I doubt that Germans even eat much bratwurst. They probably just drink beer for every meal. Other than the fact that I had the insatiable urge to change my legal name to Hans Schnieberhaven, it was a great trip and I would definately go back.

In like Flynn

It's official! I am now an employee of Verizon Wireless...pending my drug test results. I'm in. (No pun intended!) I have a start date of July 20th. After all this time searching, I don't know how easily I can give up looking for a job! I think I need counseling. The extra exciting thing about the job is that I'll be working about three blocks from where Lisa works. I don't think our hours will allow us to have lunch together, but at least we'll be close. I'll keep ya'll updated on how things progress with everything.

This afternoon we're going to the Bellevue annual Strawberry Festival. I'm trying to contain my excitement. I had an "are you good enough" test at the Verizon Wireless shop this morning at 9:30am. After I thought I had totally bombed it, they told me I passed and wanted to interview me later. I secured an afternoon time, so as not to conflict with my 11:45 interview with Emerson Hardwood. I was fashonably late and lost for that. I had to call them twice to get directions. What a great first impression! I think that went well...maybe. My 3:00 interview with Verizon went well too. They invited me back for a "less formal" interview with the HR folks. I had the funny notion that Catbert would be there. We'll see... I'll let you know the final results when I'm back up here this weekend. One with Verizon Wireless at their call center in Bellevue and the other (pending a phone call) with a lumber company in Woodinville. They both sound like great opportunities and I hope to wow them with my mad interviewing skills!
I changed my address from Oregon to Washington on Saturday and have received four calls about jobs since then! I sent off quite a few letters to some surrounding Post Offices yesterday. I'm hoping to hear back from them within the next week or so. I've gotta' say, this whole job search has opened my eyes to the vastness of the recruiting process. I wasn't able to post anything last week due to driving massive amounts. After work on Friday I drove up to Bellevue and picked up Lisa for a Saturday afternoon trip back to Portland for Matt Wolf's bachelor party. Sunday night after the wedding we drove back up to Bellevue. Then on Monday evening I drove back to Salem. Good times. (I only tell you this to justify not posting anything!)

Yesterday I met with someone at Business Careers in Lynnwood. They're a job placement agency that helps with the old search-a-roo. They basically grilled me about my past job experiences, schooling and my future expectations. I'm not sure if she took me seriously when I told her I expected my yearly compensation to be at least 500K. I just thought she was laughing with me...oh...I wasn't laughing. Anyhoo...Lisa, the lady I met with, said she had three different ideas for me and would let me know on Monday if she can schedule an interview(s). I'd really apprecitate your prayers as this next week or so come around. I must say, it was a very bitter-sweet parting. I was having second thoughts while I was riding it over to the guy's house. In the long run I know it's the best decision. I saw a show at Jeff and Beth's with serious motorcycle wrecks. Their response was, "Aren' t you glad it's gone now?" Yeah, yeah...

Last night Lisa and I went to a Mariners game. They beat the SD Padres 7-4. We saw one of the most incredible plays by Ichiro. The Padres batter hit the ball to Ichiro in right field with a runner on third. As soon as the ball was caught the runner took off to score while Ichiro threw for home. The catcher got the ball as the runner was coming home. The runner plowed down the catcher and was called out. It's a moment you had to be there for! After spending part of the afternoon at her brother and sister-in-law's for the niece's b-day bash we stopped by a friend's housewarming party. We then departed for the ever eventful "walk". The park we went to was in Kirkland. The trek down the hill to the waterfront was relatively easy (although there were numerous signs and caution tape telling us STAY OUT! Mudslides and Dangerous Conditions Ahead!!!!!). We paid for it in the end... Our journey back up the hill, in a different direction, was grueling. We realized that we are grossly out of shape and should never have attempted such a ridiculous climb. (It was like a 2 or 3 percent grade! Ha, ha, ha...)
We did make it back and are looking forward to gorging ourselves at dinner. Ham, mmmmm....

Me

Trying to figure out the whole picture thing.

Going Postal!

Well, Monday morning is my moment of truth. At 9am I'll be taking the Postal Service Exam at the Bellevue Red Lion. It's a mere 3 1/2 hours of madness! The first part is what I'm most concerned about. After that it's clean livin'! I'm hoping and praying that will be my ticket up to the greater Seattle area. If you read this before the test I'd appreciate your prayers. (Thanks!)

This afternoon Lisa and I are going to her Aunt and Uncle's house in Maple Valley for an Easter dinner. All of her fam will be there as well as some cousins, nieces and others. It'll probably be a big squeal fest....mmmmm!! Hope you all have a very happy Easter.

UPDATE!!!
I finished the test and now have approx. 3 weeks to get my results. Much has happened since I last wrote. Christmas and New Year's was great. Friends and family...very nice! A week and a half ago I had my arm operated on. I had a small lump on my right forearm removed. Being the sissy that I am, I had Lisa come down from Washington to comfort me. Other than almost throwing up during the procedure, it was a success. A visit on Wednesday confirmed that the lump was nothing to worry about. And life goes on!
Yesterday morning I had an interview in Portland. I'm considering a transfer up there with my job. Guess I'll find out if I didn't act like a schmuck next week! Other than that life continues on. Life has been happening at Super Speed! Some major changes are happening with me. I found out Monday night that I needed to be out of my current residence no later than the middle of next week. Aaaaahhhhh!! I'll be in Washington over Christmas and New Year's weekends with Lisa and my family, so moving then is out of the question. As stressed as I am, I have seen God in such an awesome way over the past two days. If I didn't believe in his power to act on my behalf before this I do now.
Over the next few months I'm not sure how much I'll be able to invest in this blog. So I'll apologize now for my lack of communication later. Thanks for coming here and "listening" to me. I suppose I warned you about this. Random my friends, random. Last week was relatively uneventful, hence nothing posted. I just got back from a great weekend in Washington. I was able to get off work early on Friday which was very nice. I went straight to Lisa's house to surprise her but no one was home. I had to blow the whole thing by calling her to find out where she had gone. She was with her family at their church office sorting stuff for the Angel Tree Ministry they head up. Got in on that for a few hours and went back to the ranch.
Saturday we went to a cool resturant called Ruby's Diner. It's a total fifties joint. I felt awkward in my modern day getup. After a few errands we went to Christy's house to babysit her. (Ha, ha...) She just had brain surgury and can't be left alone so we were "on watch". Had an awesome time with her. She, of course, shouldn't laugh, but our sarcastic humor got the best of us and had a real hoot of a time. (I'm borrowing the whole fifties thing.) After that Lisa and I went to the new Narnia movie. Great flick! It's not a must see on the big screen, but well worth the time and money.
This morning Lisa's brother and sister, Aaron and Amy, had a Christmas choir performance at their church that we went to. Very well done. Afterwards we had lunch at McD's with her brother and his wife. Good times... Then it was off to watch the Seahawks demolish the 49rs. I'm just excited to see them play the Colts on Christmas Eve. They're both Superbowl contenders, so it ought to be sweet! That's about it for now. I awoke with the typical amount of grogginess for a work week. Ahhh...only twenty six more years to go. Work, not waking up...hopefully! I got to lead worship for the college bible study that I've been helping with the past year. My friend and co-leader/leader Ben Bobeda spoke. He's been going through a study on spiritual disciplines. Tonight was humility, of which I pride myself in (har, har...), and confession. We had a great turn out. I think there were about twenty to twenty five people. Next week I get to teach on worship. So if anyone has any great suggestions, now's the time to pipe up.
Well, I best be off...as I hear stiring in the house. On the way up the mountain the 4x4 wouldn't engage and the back end was sliding all over. After realizing I needed to lock the front differential we were in business. About a mile from the summit we saw a crispy fried Subaru on the side of the road with a couple of State Troopers nearby. No more "blue flame" games on road trips for them! After loading the truck with snow, the bed not the cab, we had lunch at the lodge. There was a frenzy of activity with all the skiers and snowboarders around. Too bad we didn't bring a sled... Made it back to the house just fine. The kids enjoyed the snow and all was well.
Soon I'll be back to Oregon and work tomorrow. Ugghh! It doesn't hold the same appeal as it once did. Oh well, I must make the world go around.

Snow

Well, Lisa and I are off in search of the ever elusive snow. I've spent pretty much the whole time with Lisa's family. Wednesday I drove south and hung out with Jeff and the fam'. Yesterday and today I read Johnny G's most recent book The Broker. What a great book. Tuesday I finished off The Summons. It's been a regular Grisham fest this week. All in all it's been a very refresing time off. I'd forgotten how savory time off is.
